Boiler Thermostat Not Working? Fixes and Next Steps
Work through these safe checks to identify whether the fault lies with your thermostat, receiver, programmer or boiler.
A boiler thermostat that is not working can leave your home cold, overheated or difficult to control. The problem may be as simple as flat batteries or an incorrect schedule, but a failed receiver, lost wireless signal or control fault can also prevent the boiler from responding.
This guide explains what to check safely at home, how to tell a thermostat issue from a boiler fault, and what information to give an engineer if professional diagnosis is needed.
Start with the simplest thermostat checks
Begin by checking the thermostat display. If it is completely blank, replace the batteries with the correct type, even if they were changed recently. Make sure they are fitted the right way round and that the contacts are clean and firmly touching the battery ends.
Next, set the thermostat several degrees above the current room temperature and select the heating or heat mode. Check that it has not been left on off, holiday or frost protection mode. If your system uses a separate programmer, confirm that central heating is enabled and that the current time falls within an active heating period.
Replace or reseat the thermostat batteries.
Raise the target temperature above the room temperature.
Check the programmer is set to heating on or an active schedule.
Look for a receiver light or symbol showing a call for heat.
Some thermostats use a manual override, boost setting or temporary hold. These can change the normal schedule, so cancel any override and test the heating again. If the thermostat display works but the boiler remains silent, move on to the receiver and boiler checks.
Wireless thermostat and receiver checks
For a wireless thermostat, look at the receiver located near the boiler, programmer or wiring centre. Its lights may show power, heating demand or a communication fault, although the meanings differ between manufacturers. A flashing or absent signal light may indicate that the thermostat has lost pairing with the receiver.
Keep the thermostat within a reasonable range for testing and move it away from large metal objects, thick walls or appliances that could affect the wireless signal. Follow the manufacturer’s pairing instructions only if they are clearly provided. Do not remove covers or touch wiring.
Heating stuck on or stuck off
If the heating stays on even when the thermostat is turned down, check the programmer, timed settings and any manual override first. A receiver relay, motorised valve or wiring fault can also leave the heating running continuously. Turning the thermostat down may not stop the boiler immediately if the system is completing a short pump overrun, but it should not continue indefinitely.
If the heating will not come on, raise the thermostat well above room temperature and listen for a click or observe a call-for-heat symbol. Check whether the boiler shows a heating flame or radiator symbol. If the boiler responds to hot water but not central heating, the thermostat, programmer, receiver, motorised valve or related wiring may be involved rather than the boiler’s main heat-producing components.
Incorrect readings and intermittent control
A thermostat placed in direct sunlight, beside a radiator, near a draught or behind furniture may read the room inaccurately. Move a portable thermostat to a representative position, around chest height and away from heat sources, then allow time for the reading to settle. A permanently mounted thermostat should not be moved without checking its installation requirements.
Intermittent heating control can result from weak batteries, a poor wireless signal, loose connections or a receiver that is beginning to fail. Make a note of when the fault happens, including whether it follows a schedule change, a power cut or a particular time of day. This pattern can help an engineer identify the cause more quickly.
Check control type and system compatibility
Not every thermostat communicates with every boiler in the same way. A basic on/off control sends a demand for heat, and the boiler then operates according to its own settings. Other systems use modulation, including OpenTherm-type control in general terms, allowing the thermostat and compatible boiler to adjust heat output more gradually.
A replacement thermostat may appear to power up but still be unsuitable for the boiler or wiring arrangement. Incorrect compatibility, unsuitable terminals or a control designed for a different communication method can mimic a boiler fault. Do not alter terminals, bridge connections or open the boiler case, as wiring work should be completed by a qualified heating engineer.
When to arrange professional fault finding
Book a diagnostic visit if batteries, settings and signal checks do not restore control, or if the boiler displays an error code. A control fault can prevent the boiler receiving a heating demand, making it seem as though the boiler itself has failed. An engineer can test the thermostat output, receiver, wiring, programmer and boiler response safely.
Do not remove the boiler case or investigate internal electrical or gas components yourself. If you smell gas, see signs of overheating or suspect an unsafe appliance, turn off the appliance if it is safe to do so, leave the area and contact the appropriate emergency service or a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.
