How do I check the efficiency of my boiler?

Improving your boiler's efficiency can save you a lot of money. Heating in your house accounts for around 60% of your energy consumption; the more efficient your boiler, the lower your heating bills. We go through a few things at Green Flame Plumbing and Heating to help you determine how efficient your boiler is.

How can I determine the efficiency of my boiler?

The first step in establishing your boiler's efficiency is to look for a label with an energy efficiency rating on your boiler. This is common on modern boilers since it is typically placed on the boiler or the container the boiler arrived in.

If you have an older boiler and cannot locate the sticker, there are a handful of other methods for determining the efficiency rating.

How can I determine an older boiler's efficiency rating?

If you have an older boiler, you'll need to figure out the model number. Simply inspect behind the boiler, where the pipes escape, and under the front flap, where the dials are positioned. A little sticker or plate with model information will be visible.

A brand name, such as Vaillant, Worcester Bosch, Ideal, Baxi, or any number, will also be visible on the label. A model, which is generally a number corresponding to the size of the boiler, such as Worcester Bosch Greenstar 24i, will be included beside the brand. You may then search up the model number to see how efficient it is once you have it.

What should I do if I can't locate the model number?

Model numbers and information might fade with time, or you may have forgotten the original documentation that came with your boiler, making determining its efficiency difficult. We can still get a general estimate of its efficiency if you ask your heating professional to look into it.
